ENHANCING TEACHERS' COMPETENCE IN FUNCTIONAL PEDAGOGY FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN PRIMARY EDUCATION: CASE STUDY OF GWAGWALADA AREA COUNCIL, FCT ABUJA

Abstract

This study was on Enhancing teachers' competence in functional pedagogy for effective teaching in primary education in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT Abuja. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Two research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population of this study comprised 480 teachers in public primary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council. The samples for this study was 262 teacher obtained using proportionate and stratified random sampling technique with the aid of Yamane (1967) sample determination formula. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection in the study. The questionnaire entitled, "Teachers' Competency Enhancing Questionnaire" (TCEQ) was developed by the researcher. The instrument was designed to collect information on Enhancing teachers' competence in functional pedagogy for effective teaching and learning in primary education. The instrument was validated by 2 experts in the departments of curriculum & teaching and educational foundations. A trial test was conducted on 26 teachers in Abaji Area Council of Abuja. The data obtained was analysyzed using Cronbach Alpha Reliability Estimates which yielded coefficients of .88 to .90 for the subscales. The questionnaire was administered by the researcher with the assistance of two research assistants. The data was analyzed using simple linear regression analysis. Result obtained revealed that there is significant prediction of teachers' retraining on effective teaching in primary education in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT Abuja; there is significant prediction of teachers' evaluation on effective teaching in primary education in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT Abuja. Based on findings, it was recommended among others that educational authorities in Gwagwalada Area Council should establish regular retraining programs for primary school teachers, focusing on innovative teaching methods, subject matter expertise, and classroom management skills. This can include workshops, seminars, and online courses that cater to the specific needs of teachers and enhance their professional development.
